Use Mind Mapping to Improve your Business
In order to improve your business, it may be necessary from time to time to sit down and brainstorm new ideas, and mind mapping is an excellent way to do this. In fact, as quickly as business moves and changes today, you may find it necessary to have brainstorming or mind mapping sessions more often than you ever did in the past. Finding new ways to appeal to your customer base is a never-ending task, and if you cannot keep up with your competitors, you will not be able to succeed.
Mind mapping and similar methods have been used in various forms since as early as the third century AD, when noted thinker of the time, Porphyry of Tyros first developed the concept. There is also evidence of mind maps being used by philosopher Raymond Llull, who lived from 1235 to 1315. However, the modern concept of the mind map was not brought to the public until the 1960s, by Dr. Allan Collins and M. Ross Quillian. They had discovered the semantic network through studying human learning in the 1950s and mind mapping was one of the results. This powerful brainstorming aid can be useful for a variety of things, and you can use it to improve your business as well.
How Mind Mapping Works
Mind maps are used to help you create, visualize, structure, expand and classify ideas. It is also used as an aid in organization, decision making and problem solving. It can even be used as a note taking aid during lectures and speeches. A mind map is simply a diagram to help organize your thoughts, while being somewhat loose and easy to use so you can concentrate on coming up with ideas rather than fiddling with your notes. A key word or idea is placed in the center, and ideas, words, tasks, or anything else you need are placed around and linked to that central idea.
Start by writing the subject or main idea you will be exploring in the center of a piece of paper and drawing a circle around it. Brainstorm several major subdivisions, important facts or subheadings that relate to the topic and draw lines for each one that radiate out from the main idea and label them accordingly. Explore each of these subjects to see what additional subjects come up under each one, and draw additional lines for each of these subjects. Continue doing this until you have fully explored that major subdivision, and then move on to the next one until you have found everything you can for the main idea.
Mind mapping in this way helps to keep you organized during your brainstorming sessions, yet stimulates your creativity rather than stifling it. It will encourage you to explore every avenue of the subject so you leave nothing out—and maybe even see new angles to improve your business you never thought possible.
