Don’t know how much to feed your dog? Don’t know what to feed him? Here’s the scoop on what you absolutely need to know.
Dogs need several different kinds of nutrients: amino acids from proteins, fatty acids and carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water. Pretty straight forward – but confusing when you start reading dog food bags. Keep this in mind – your dog’s individual nutritional needs depend on its size, breed and stage of life.
Dogs don't do well without protein. In fact what you need to know and your dog needs to eat are 10 amino acids dogs don't manufacture on their own. These essential amino acids are the building blocks of your dog’s diet. Proteins need to have a balance of all the essential amino acids.
It’s a well-known fact dogs can tell when their food lacks amino acid and avoid eating it. Even more interesting is dogs deliberately choose foods high in protein. Dogs can eat vegan if it contains enough protein and you supplement with Vitamin D. Fats and fatty acids are needed to keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy and ward off infections.
Without getting way too technical – you need to be careful of what’s in your dog’s feedbag and bowl. The best way to make sure is to talk to your Veterinarian about his nutritional needs right from the get-go. One thing is for sure, chocolate is not a nutritional need and in fact can be deadly.
You might be wondering about the age-old question all dog owners have about dogs eating their own doo instead of what's in their bowls. Their stomach acid is totally different from ours – but - here’s the most interesting tidbit though: poop contains vitamins produced by their intestinal bacteria.
The animal is unable to absorb the vitamins through the intestinal wall, but can get at them by eating the doo. Doo also contains a certain amount of protein. If you have cats, you’ll relate to this: dogs love cat litter leavings because they're high in protein. So much for doggy kisses.
